Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, 5th ed.
Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning is the NSCA’s own textbook for the CSCS exam, and the 5th edition is new. Current edition: Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, 5th edition (Human Kinetics, ©2027, ISBN 9781718216273, $119 hardback); the 4th edition came before it. It is the most complete single book for the exam, but the exam is written to the content outline, not to the book’s chapters. Below: what the 5th edition adds, which chapters serve which domain, and when the 4th is still fine.

What is new in the 5th edition
The publisher lists five additions (Human Kinetics):
- a new chapter on functional and nonfunctional overreaching, overtraining and the overtraining syndrome (chapter 24);
- age-related and sex-related differences as stand-alone chapters (7 and 8);
- research on mental health and the psychological impact of injury;
- vaping and smoking and what they mean for aerobic training;
- activating the central nervous system before training.
Each of these lines up with the outline in force since July 2025, which names fatigue and restoration, athlete mental health and referral, individual differences by age and sex, and CNS preparation in the warm-up. The book runs to 864 pages in 26 chapters and comes with HKPropel online access: lab activities and online videos of 21 foundational exercises.
Chapters by exam domain
The publisher does not map chapters to the outline; this is our reading of the 5th-edition contents against the current outline. Chapters that serve two domains are listed under both.
- Exercise Sciences: 1–8 (body systems, biomechanics, bioenergetics, endocrine responses, anaerobic and aerobic adaptations, age and sex differences) and 24 (fatigue and recovery)
- Sport Psychology: 9, plus the mental-health material new to this edition
- Nutrition: 10–12 (nutrition for health, for performance, performance-enhancing substances)
- Program Design: 18–22 (resistance, plyometric, speed and agility, aerobic and metabolic programs, periodization) and 23 (reconditioning)
- Exercise Technique: 15–17 (warm-up and flexibility, free weight and machine technique, alternative implements) and the technique parts of 19–21
- Program Implementation: 13–14 (test selection, administration and interpretation); coaching a session has no chapter of its own
- Organization and Administration: 25–26 (facility design, policies, legal issues) and 24 (recognizing overtraining)
The gap: coaching the session
Program Implementation, new in 2025, asks how you run a session: roles and expectations, cues and demonstrations, feedback, the debrief. None of the 26 chapters has a title about coaching a session, so this task is where the textbook alone leaves you shortest. The domain page lists what the outline asks.
4th or 5th edition?
The handbook does not tie the exam to an edition; it says the questions are based on the outline (handbook, p. 35). If you already own the 4th edition, keep it and top up the areas the 5th edition adds or expands: overreaching and recovery, athlete mental health and when to refer, and age and sex differences. If you are buying now, the 5th edition is the current one, and chapter guides written for the 4th will not match its numbering.

Using it well
Read with the outline open: for each chapter, note which tasks it answers, and skip depth the outline does not ask for. The end-of-chapter questions check recall; the applied section needs more than that, so pair each domain with its practice questions on this site. The study guide shows how much time each domain deserves.

No book is required. The exam follows the content outline; the 5th edition matches it more closely than the 4th, but both cover most of it.
Is there a free PDF of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning?
Not from the publisher. Human Kinetics sells the hardback with HKPropel online access; libraries are the free legal route.
Is there a different book for the tactical exam?
Yes, the tactical exam has its own Essentials title; see the TSAC-F study guide.
