ACSM-CEP study guide, built on GETP 12
Study from the outline first and the books second: the exam has followed GETP 12, together with the new outline, since July 10, 2025. What follows is how to split the hours.

The books, and which edition
- Recommended: ACSM’s Clinical Exercise Physiology, 2nd edition, and ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, 12th edition. The clinical text carries the disease chapters; GETP carries the testing and prescription standards.
- Optional: ACSM’s Certification Review, 6th edition, and the online ACSM-CEP Exam Prep Course; ACSM says the exam can be taken without buying any preparation material.
- Edition check: GETP 11 and anything printed against it predate the outline now in force. A used copy saves money only if the edition is current.
Where to spend the hours
- Exercise training (24%) and clinical exercise prescription (22%): nearly half the scored items. Work them condition by condition: what changes in heart failure, COPD, diabetes, cancer, frailty or after orthopedic surgery.
- Exercise testing and patient assessment (18% each): the ECG and medication material lives here.
- Education and behavior change (13%): motivational interviewing is the one technique the outline names as a task.
- Legal and professional (5%): small, and both tasks are recall level, so a short list of standards and rules covers it.
Two skills the degree has to supply
Required coursework: three course areas, ECG interpretation and pharmacology among them (requirements). The outline then treats two of those topics as working skills, not background: reading 12-lead and telemetry rhythms (assessment, testing and training), and adjusting a test or a session for medication use, timing and side effects (the first four domains) (outline). If your program covered ECG or pharmacology lightly, start there.
What the exam gives you on screen
A calculator is built into the exam, and metabolic equations are supplied with the questions that need them; other formulas, such as body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio, are not (handbook, p. 14). Learn the formulas it leaves out, and practice choosing the right metabolic equation rather than reciting it.
Physiology you can borrow
General exercise physiology and bioenergetics are not specific to this exam; this site explains them once, on CSCS exercise science. Screening of apparently healthy adults and FITT-VP for health are on the ACSM-EP pages. Spend CEP hours on the clinical layer, and use the practice test to find which layer is thin.

Studying for the CEP: common questions
What books do I need for the ACSM-CEP?
None are required. Two are recommended, both listed under the books: the clinical text for disease chapters and GETP 12 for testing and prescription.
Can I use GETP 11?
Not safely: the exam has followed GETP 12 since July 10, 2025, together with the new content outline.
Is there a prep course from the certifying body?
Yes, an online CEP prep course, sold alone or bundled with the exam for $499 / $629 (member / nonmember, Oct 2026). It is optional.
