Who the credential is for

The outline’s job definition is narrow on purpose: clients who are apparently healthy or whose disease is medically controlled, seen in commercial, community, studio, worksite, university and hospital-based fitness settings (content outline, p. 1). The work is preparticipation screening, submaximal graded exercise tests, strength, flexibility and body-composition assessments, then the program that follows.

  • Your clients are patients in a clinical program? That is the ACSM-CEP, the next rung, with maximal testing, ECGs and a higher entry bar (master’s + 600 h or bachelor’s + 1,200 h).
  • Your clients are athletes and the goal is performance? Periodization, loading by %1RM and speed work belong to the NSCA CSCS, which accepts a bachelor’s in any field.
  • Weighing every exercise physiologist route at once? Exercise physiologist certification lays them side by side.

Older prep material describes an earlier exam

What changed in 2025: The July 2025 outline is aligned with GETP 12 and mostly reworded, with more on client communication and education; common equations are listed in the handbook, and attempt counts were reset on February 20, 2025. The certifying body’s own EP page still lists the Guidelines (GETP) 11th edition under recommended books while stating that exams follow the 12th from July 10, 2025 (EP page); study from the 12th. Search results and older prep products also still say “EP-C”; the current handbook and outline use only ACSM-EP.

From degree to credential

  1. Check the degree

An exercise science, exercise physiology or kinesiology bachelor’s, or equivalent coursework; you can sit the exam in your final semester. For new graduates the rule tightens: CAAHEP degree from Aug 2027. Requirements

  2. Hold CPR/AED

Required: CPR/AED; first aid from 2027. The CPR/AED course must include a live, hands-on skills check and be current when you apply.

  3. Apply, then book

Apply and pay in the MyACSM portal; approval opens a 3-month window to book a Pearson VUE seat or an OnVUE session. Cost

  4. Pass, then renew

The result is on screen when you finish. Keep the credential with 60 CECs and a current CPR/AED card. Exam info

Question 1 of 4 · Exercise Counseling and Behavior Modification · 20%

When a client consistently mentions wanting to exercise but never follows through, which communication technique would be most effective?

  1. Prescribing a stricter schedule answers a motivation problem with more rules. The client has not committed, so extra structure tends to raise resistance.
  2. Direct confrontation usually produces defensiveness and arguments for staying the same, the opposite of the change talk the trainer needs.
  3. Highlighting the gap between what the client says they want and what they actually do lets the client voice their own reasons to change, the core move of motivational interviewing.
  4. Ignoring the inconsistency wastes the most useful material in the conversation and leaves the client's ambivalence unexplored.
Question 2 of 4 · Health and Fitness Assessment · 33%

When conducting a preparticipation health screening, which of the following client responses would indicate the need for medical clearance before beginning a moderate-intensity exercise program?

  1. Age by itself no longer triggers clearance. The current algorithm looks at activity habits, known cardiovascular, metabolic or renal disease, and symptoms, so an asymptomatic person over 40 is not referred for age alone.
  2. Mild seasonal allergies are not a cardiovascular, metabolic or renal condition and do not call for clearance before moderate exercise.
  3. Occasional soreness after activity is the normal response to unaccustomed exercise and is not a screening red flag.
  4. Chest pain with exertion is a sign suggestive of cardiovascular disease, so ACSM's screening algorithm calls for medical clearance before the program begins.
Question 3 of 4 · Exercise Prescription and Implementation · 40%

When calculating METs for a specific activity, which formula is MOST accurate?

  1. One MET equals 3.5 mL/kg/min of oxygen uptake, so dividing relative VO2 by 3.5 gives the activity's cost in METs.
  2. Multiplying by 3.5 runs the conversion backwards: METs × 3.5 gives mL/kg/min, so this would inflate the answer more than tenfold.
  3. A heart rate ratio is not a MET value; heart rate and oxygen cost do not scale one-to-one, and the ratio ignores the 3.5 mL/kg/min resting reference.
  4. Dividing absolute VO2 in L/min by body mass gives L/kg/min, a relative oxygen uptake in odd units, not a multiple of resting metabolism.
Question 4 of 4 · Health and Fitness Assessment · 33%

Which of the following statements about body composition assessment using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is correct?

  1. BIA does not image bone. Bone mineral density needs a method such as DXA.
  2. BIA estimates body water from electrical impedance, so dehydration, recent fluid intake or a full bladder shift the result. That is why pre-test conditions are standardized.
  3. Recent exercise changes fluid distribution and skin temperature, so it does affect BIA, which is why guidelines ask clients to avoid exercise before the test.
  4. BIA is a field estimate with a standard error of several percentage points; laboratory methods such as DXA or multi-compartment models are more accurate.

ACSM-EP questions

What does ACSM-EP stand for?

ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist, awarded by the American College of Sports Medicine. Its accreditor is the NCCA. “EP-C” is the label older study products still use; the current handbook and outline do not.

Can you become an ACSM exercise physiologist without a degree?

No. The exam requires an exercise science, exercise physiology or kinesiology bachelor’s or an equivalent course set, and there is no petition for other degrees or for work experience (degree requirements). Details: ACSM-EP requirements.

How hard is the ACSM-EP?

In July–December 2025, 70% of first-time candidates and 53% of repeat candidates passed. You need a scaled 550 of 800. More: pass rate.

How long does the certification last?

3 years. Renewal takes 60 CECs and a $70 fee, as of Oct 2026.
